An amendment was made to the record in 1975, which recognized 841 Scheduled Castes and 510 Scheduled Tribes. The total share of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes combined was found to be 22.5% with the Scheduled Castes accounting for 17% and the Scheduled Tribes accounting for the remaining 7.5%. Following the report many Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes increasingly referred to themselves as Dalit, a Marathi language terminology used by B R Ambedkar which accurately means “oppressed”. Despite the excessive overall enrolment rate for primary education amongst rural children of age 10, half couldn’t read at a fundamental stage, over 60% had been unable to do division, and half dropped out by the age of 14. Students are exposed to a wider range of subjects, including further languages, arts, and vocational subjects.

Some faculties taught the curriculum by way of vernacular languages with English as a second language. The time period “pre-modern” was used for 3 varieties of faculties – the Arabic and Sanskrit schools which taught Muslim or Hindu sacred literature and the Persian faculties which taught Persian literature.
